It’s official: I declare it an Herculean task to attempt to diet (or even just limit the damage) during the holiday season. Another day, another party. It seems my life consists of an endless round of social gatherings characterised by endless amounts of irresistible temptations of the food and drink category.
In desperation, I have devised some new strategies for weight loss. One of them is actually relatively effective, although it does cause a few raised eyebrows. I have decided to have some of whatever I feel like, but only have a couple of bites of each temptation. Anyway, most of the taste is in the first to bite, thereafter eating is a mechanical process.
Many of us are brought up from childhood where we have been told they we are not allowed to leave the table until we finished all the food on our plate. While this was done generally with the best intentions in mind it is not the way that we should look at eating. You don’t need to eat everything that is on your plate.
So I have a bite or two of whatever is on my plate and leave the rest. I then spend at least 20 calories re-assuring my hostess that there is nothing wrong with her food; it’s just that I’ve had enough. If you’ve had enough to eat you should stop whether there is more food available or not. These days there is no need to get rid of food as excess food can go into the refrigerator where you can eat it tomorrow.
Don’t feel obliged to eat all the food that is placed before you when you’re eating out. You should only eat to feel comfortable and not feel full. If you are constantly finding there is additional food left when you are satisfied then you need to reduce the quantities that you serve yourself. Where possible put the food on your plate that you intend to eat at any particular meal and then take that plate with the food to the table. This will encourage you to put limits on the amount of food that you will eat and is one of the most effective stategies for weight loss.
It is better to have a little less than too much.
For most people eating everything that is on their plate is a firmly ingrained habit that has been drummed into them from early childhood. Peter lectured, “That’s the best part…you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick. This is Heaven.”
With that the old man lost his temper, threw down his hat and stomped on it, shrieking wildly.
Peter and his wife both tried to calm him down, asking him what was wrong. The old man looked at his wife and said, “This is entirely your fault! If it weren’t for your obsession with healthy living, I could have been here ten years ago!”

This is partly why it is almost always easiest to lose weight when you start dieting, and gets challenging as you continue because, when you are significantly overweight, your metabolism is already at an elevated rate, so that even a slight cutback in calories will lead to an immediate weight loss.

But what happens after that immediate loss, when a plateau occurs and motivation seems to go by the “weigh” side? Is Hypnosis It Temporary?Not only is Hypnosis not temporary, nothing could be further from the truth. But this again is a common myth and misconception. Hypnosis is as temporary as any knowledge that we know and learn. When you learn to ride a bicycle is that learning temporary? Even if you stopped riding for many years, does that mean that it’s temporary? No, of course not! Of course we could choose to ride or not ride, because that is our free will. Again, we need to review that hypnosis is not dangerous. If hypnosis was about taking away people’s choices, that would be dangerous. But by connecting you through many positive responses to the correct behaviors, an effective hypnotist is able to use those good feelings to guide their clients to a healthy and fit new life. For example, when using hypnosis to lose weight the hypnotist will connect good positive feelings to healthier food choices and bad negative feelings to the unhealthy food choices. This is to guide you from your unconscious/subconscious to correct behaviors that will lead to weight loss.Studies Show Permanency of HypnosisThe National Institutes of Health shows over 5000 clinical research studies as of December, 2004 having to do with hypnosis and its benefits currently being conducted worldwide. A study of note published by the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine : JCSM : Official Publication of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, that had a 5 year follow up was “The Treatment of Parasomnias with Hypnosis: a 5-Year Follow-Up Study by Peter J. Hauri, Ph.D., Michael H. Silber, M.B.Ch.B., and Bradley F. Boeve, M.D. This study showed that of the large number of subjects that were symptom-free or at least much improved almost 90% of them maintained the change at the 5 year mark.Free Will vs. Permanent ProgrammingThere is free will in every human being. Experienced and well trained hypnotists create permanent changes in beliefs, behaviors, and perceptions. These permanent changes last as long as their subjects want them to last when instructed so. So while a permanent suggestion is placed into the subconscious, if the subject, through free will, chooses to behave in the old way, this is not an indication that the hypnosis was temporary. It is only the exercising of free will that is evident. Now if the client wanted to behave in the correct way but seemed to be unable to follow through on their wishes by some kind of uncontrollable urge – that is an entirely different response. That is evidence of some kind of feeling based response. Those feelings are our most powerful motivators, so any unresolved feelings or incorrect feelings left in place will assuredly overwhelm the permanent suggestions. It is now proven that it is time for the client to resolve the feelings that are presently dictating his behavior.Becoming Familiar With ChangeThere is also a certain level of familiarity that comes with experience over time. Any time we get something new, it’s newness is it’s most impressive quality. As we get used to it, it’s “newness” seems to wear off. It is probably just as effective as it’s always been, but it just doesn’t have the shine or polish. If a feeling of gratitude were to be connected to a certain behavior that we wanted to perform, then every time we did that behavior we would feel that gratitude. After awhile, that behavior would become habit, second nature, and that level of gratitude wouldn’t seem so special. Now we are ready for the next level of behavior and increased gratitude to continue along our path of growth and experience.So hypnosis is certainly not temporary, nor a temporary fix. It’s meant to move us into the future, onto the path of correct behaviors and more important goals.
